ARCH DESIGN STUDIO 1: PROJECT 3EXP 3: Screen Caps

PRADA
With this design, which functions mostly as a public space/monument for Prada and fashion, I wanted to express a lightness and show the gravity of the structure as if it were many pieces of fabric cuts, all sewn together. The

COMMUNAL
With the communal meeting space, I continued the hanging theme of Prada's structure, aiming to evoke the appearance of hanging fabric, like sails or a hammock. I wanted it to be playful, and fresh, a place where one might hav food and relax while meeting. I wanted to eleviated an power struggle between the clients, by creating a softer, open environment, that didn't have stong 'fountations' in any direction idoelogically, or physically.

OBAMA
Obama's 'office' is based on the amphitheatres of the past, the yellow space functioning as a point where a speaker can make an address to the workers, or to guests. It has many rooms/offices, because I believe that Obama would want a great number of different opinions for his leadership to work. Obama doesn't have a special office of his own, because I believe that he would want to avoid the top-down, pproach to power, and would want to be seen as one of the team, rather than a leader, or dictator. In the spirit of Obama's attempts at bringing transparency to government, I wanted all the offices to look in at each other, so there is no secrecy in the work place, and all speaking in the amphitheatre is never missed.

The process used for developing these designs can be seen in an older post, in the form of sketches.

EXP 3: OBAMA-MADONNA-PRADA

M
ASH-UP

What sets her apart is her disregard
...for the 'dictates', balance[ing] this insubordinate side of her personality with a gentle touch on the elbow...[a] keen sense of propriety.

Original article quotes:

OBAMA

"A gentle touch on the elbow from his boss ensured that Biden reined in the gags and concentrated on the dignity of his new office. A small moment, perhaps. But one that showed Obama's keen sense of propriety. A break, also, with the relentlessly jovial Bush."

MADONNA

"Madonna balanced this insubordinate side of her personality with a drive for perfectionism and high-achievement."

Nobel:

The entrance to Nobel's Lab, the heavy stone block is representative of guilt associated with being labelled a merchant of war, it must be passed under (crouching) to enter.

Reverse angle: The space after entering has a void in the floor, through which the stone can pass if it falls, this represents Nobel's attempt to create a legacy of non-violence.

View from the meeting point.

Cousteau: one must pass down ramp into depths of water to enter the lab.In this lab there is a very real danger that curiosity can pull you down into the blackness and death.

mayan temple - embeded video

I've come to see my building as resembling a temple ( a knocked over one maybe); as something that is climbed; a forced physical engagement with the form of the building. This idea is enacted in the extreme by the tourists at the latter part of this youtube video, who find themselves sliding down the stairs of a Mayan temple on their bums because of lack of a comforting handrail.
